Manassas Experienced a Drop in Crime as its Population Rose in 2014

Each year, the City of Manassas Police Department releases a report detailing crime rates in the city and changes from previous years. In 2014, Manassas experienced a drop in numbers for nearly every type of reported crime. Calls to the police have also dropped, as has the city’s crime rate. All of these positive changes happened at the same time that the city’s population grew.

The city’s crime rate dropped to its lowest in a decade, with only 21 serious or violent crimes per 1,000 residents. This is a drop of 12% from 2013. The large majority of crimes were property crimes, such as theft and larceny. There were 4,596 total reported crimes in the city in 2014.

Some of the categories experiencing more notable decreases from 2013 to 2014 included:

  • Auto theft. There was a 51% decrease in stolen vehicles in Manassas from the previous year.
  • Domestic violence. There were 11% less reports of domestic violence in 2014, but officers arrested more of the reported offenders than they did in 2013.
  • Graffiti. Police were only alerted to 14 cases of this type of vandalism, a drop of more than half from 2013. Very few cases were suspected to be gang-related.
  • Juvenile arrests. The arrest of minors for all crimes dropped 30% in 2014.
  • Drunk driving. The number of arrests for driving under the influence decreased more than 10% during this time period.

Along with these decreases, there were minor increases in parking citations and officer response times.

As the number of crimes dropped, the city’s population grew, rising to nearly 42,000.

A total of 2,271 people were arrested in Manassas in 2014. People who have been arrested in Northern Virginia need an experienced criminal defense attorney they can count on.
